Genius Hour!

We have started Genius hour and the students are excited! Genius hour happens once a week in our classroom. We are doing it every Friday afternoon. The students love it so much because they get to do research and learn about a topic that is interest to them. We have gone over how to properly use the internet, how to put things in our own words and to make jot notes. Once the students have answered their question of interest they have to figure out a way that they can present their information to us as a class. Some are doing powerpoint, concept maps on kidspiration, posters, videos and making models or doing demonstrations to go along with what they are presenting on. As a teacher it has been exciting to see the students get so involved in what they are researching. I love it!

Here are some great links that explain genius hour in a little more detail!

Welcome Back!!

Welcome to another school year! I am excited to get to know my new class of fourth graders and embark on our learning journey together. This year one of my goals is to blog on a continual basis so you can see what we're up to in our classroom. I'll also be using the blog as a form of assessment in which I will be posting questions based on what we are learning and students will post a response. You will also find pictures of what we are up to, week at glance memos, and links and tips for Math and ELA.
Check out our twitter account too. The link is on the right side. We LOVE sending out tweets and RECIEVING tweets as we connect with people from in our school, community and even other parts of the world!

Cheers to a great year,
Mrs. Stefan

TWIN Day & Starry Nights!

Today's spirit day at school was twin day and we had some fantastic looking sets of twins in the fourth grade!

In art many of the outcomes relate to life in Saskatchewan and depicting that through different art styles. We have been doing a prairie sky/setting theme and thought it would be fun to take the famous "Starry Night" and turn it into "Starry Night of Estevan". The pictures were done with pastel and look AWESOME!!

Interviews at Creighton Lodge

We went to Creighton Lodge to interview the residents about what life was like we they were young and to get some advice about life! It was a great morning spent with the residents. We learned a lot about what school was like when they were kids, what sports they played, the cost of things and we also gained some important advice like not to give up, listen to those that are older than you, stay active and get outside and quit playing video games! ;)

Snow Shoeing

We went snowshoeing! For all of us it was something new, exciting and challenging. Once we figured out how to put our snow shoes on we began on a snow shoe treasure hunt!

Reading the map to determine where to go first for clue #1.

And we're off!

We made it back with treasure hunt prizes in hand; excited to try it again!
